Jim Moran represents Northern Virginia's 8th District – including Arlington, Alexandria, portions of Fairfax County, Falls Church and Reston -- in the United States House of Representatives. A chairman on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, he now serves as head of the Interior Subcommittee, and as a senior member on the Defense Subcommittee, overseeing the budgets for the EPA, Park Service, Interior Department, Smithsonian and Department of Defense. He also chairs the Animal Protection Caucus, co-chairs the Congressional Prevention Caucus, leads the Task Force on Sovereign Wealth Funds and was an original co-founder of the New Democratic Coalition.

With more than thirty years experience as a public servant and community activist, Jim Moran has never stopped working for Northern Virginia. His political career began in 1979 when he was elected to the Alexandria City Council. Jim became the Vice-Mayor three years later and served in that capacity until 1985, when he was elected Mayor. His first run for Congress was successful, joining the House of Representatives in 1990.

Jim Moran is a graduate of Holy Cross, where he majored in economics. He went on to earn his masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970. Before running for public office he worked at the Department of Health, Education and the Workforce (HEW) and also served as a committee staffer for the Senate Appropriations Committee.

An Arlington resident, Jim is married to LuAnn Bennett. He has four children and four grandchildren.

Here is Jim Moran’s statement on his goals in seeking re-election this November 2010:

Fighting to improve the quality of life for everyone in Northern Virginia is job number 1. The failed Bush Administration left the American economy in shambles. Over the past two years, we’ve worked hard to prevent a deeper decline and reverse the severe economic downturn that resulted from this mismanagement. At the same time, we’ve enacted historic legislative achievements, from passing health insurance reform that will make affordable insurance available to all Americans to reform of Wall Street so that the American peoples’ hard earned savings will be better protected from gross financial negligence.

In the 112th Congress, I plan to focus my energies on strengthening our region's economic vitality and diversity through promoting affordable housing, an efficient public transit system, an educational system that develops every child's full potential, and the protection of our natural environment. I believe the federal government can and should play an indispensible role in enabling individuals and their communities to maximize economic and educational opportunities, while preserving an even higher quality of life for their children and grandchildren. We must also tackle head-on the growing national debt so that future generations are not saddled with this generation’s fiscal irresponsibility.
